Frequently asked questions about Morocco                                                                    deutsche Version

Camping

Campgrounds don't have European standard, but are much cheaper. In the south you can camp anywhere without problems, but you will have a lot of guests. They just come and look. It is much easier to look for a place after sunset, most people will be at home and nobody knows that you are there. In the country people will respect tents, there are no attacks, but this can be different in beach areas. There you should go to a campground or stay with several cars.

Ferry

There are ferries from Sète in southern France, Almeria, Algeciras and Tarifa. Of course Sète is not too far, but expensive. The journey will take 36 hours and you will arrive in Tanger well relaxed. In Algeciras is the cheapest ferry and the shortest time on the ocean, but also a very long trip if you come from England or Germany and you must count in the costs for hotel, gas and highway.

Hammam

Here a few words from a Moroccan woman:

Hammam etiquette - you usually strip down to your underwear. No tops required. It's a good idea to have a little bath-mat to sit on. For the more intimate part of your bath, it's usually good etiquette to face the wall. Usually, the place consists of 3 steam rooms of increasing degrees of temperature. You are given buckets that you fill up with hot and cold water and you dispose them around you to kind of mark your territory. Usually the hot room is deserted, people go there only for a short interval to open up their pores.

I recommend using the services of the ladies that work there, they give you a rough massage/skin exfoliating scrub in exchange of a small tip. And don't forget to take some juicy oranges/clementines for when you come out completely dehydrated. It's a common snack in the dressing "lounge"; which is a great place to people-watch. Avoid Sat/Sunday mornings as the place gets full and the children's deafening cries echo forever into the cavernous space.

Money

Since many years the Moroccan Dirham is very stable, the exchange rate depends on a basket (EUR 60%, USD 30%, GBP 5%, Yen 5%). The Dirham (DH) is divided in 100 Centimes. There are notes of 20, 50, 100 and 200 DH, 1/2, 1, 2, 5 and 10 DH.

10 Dirham are about 1 Euro.

Export and Import of Dirham is not allowed, keep the exchange bills, because you can only change back a part of the money.

In most bigger cities and touristy areas there are international ATM's accepting credit cards or the European EC-card with the PIN.

Rental cars

It is said often that if you want a good car and service you should book the rental already at home with a good international agency like Avis , Hertz or other. I always booked my car in Morocco with small agencies, got a good price and a good service. Assounfou Tours in Marrakech picked me up at Agadir and at Casa airport with my car. Flat tires are never included.

Safety

Even after September, 11th there is no safety risk in Morocco. People are friendly to all travelers who respect their tradition, American, European or Asian, there is no difference. In big tourist cities like Tangier or Agadir you should watch your wallet, but there is no heavy crime.
