Djebel Toubkal - Trekking                                                       

Basis for trekking tours to the Djebel Toubkal is Imlil, a small village off the Tizi-n-Test mountain road R 203 from Marrakech to Taroudannt. From Marrakech take first the road to Asni, 45 km, from there starts a good asphalt road to Imlil, 15 km. In Marrakech near Bab Roub there are collective taxis directly to Imlil, price 30 DH per person. The taxi don’t start before all seats are taken. There is also a bus to Asni, and from there a collective taxi to Imlil, 15 DH per person.

In Imlil are guides waiting on the street, but it is best to proceed to the center of the village, there is a little place with parking. There you find the office of the official guides:

There is good information available, you can buy maps of the area 1:50.000 and you get an official, licensed guide there. There are fixed prices for the different services. The following information and prices are from September 2005.

Organised Tours

1 to 2 persons: 400 DH day/person
3 to 4 persons: 300 DH day/person
5 to 10 persons: 250 DH day/person

All costs like guide, accommodation and mule are included. Sleeping bags are not provided.

Trekking tours to the Djebel Toubkal are possible from Mai to October, from 2 days to 2 weeks. In winter you can also do tours, but mostly in the valleys and beautiful mountain village you cannot reach by car.

There are different tours with different duration possible. Here are two examples, more on request:

2-day-tour

Day 1:  Imlil – Neltner Hütte (at the foot of Djebel Toubkal), 5 hours march, accommodation in cabin

Day 2:  Climbing to the peak (4.167 m), 3 hours march, back 2 hours, back to Imlil, 4 hours

6-day-tour

Day 1:  Imlil – Tacheddirt, 4 hours, accomodation in bivouac or small tents or in the cabin of CAF (French Alpine Association).

Day 2:  Tacheddirt – Tizi-n-Likemt (3.555 m) – Azib Likemt, 6 hours march, accommodation in bivouac

Day 3:  Azib Likemt – Tizi-n-Oaouraine (3.120 m) – Amzouzerte, 7 hours march, accommodation with habitants

Day 4:  Amzouzerte – Lac Ifni, 4 hours march, accommodation in bivouac. Lac Ifni is a natural lake, swimming is possible in summer

Day 5:  Lac Ifni – Tizi-n-Ouanoumss (3.650 m) - Neltner Hütte (at the foot of Djebel Toubkal), 6.5 hours march, accommodation in cabin

Day 6:  Climbing to the peak (4.167 m), 3 hours march, back 2 hours, back to Imlil, 4 hours

You can also do day tours with or without guide. The costs for a guide are 250 DH/day in summer, 300 DH/day in winter, meal for the guide in addition. A mule is only necessary if you have too much luggage, for a day trip it is usual not necessary. You can either bring your food or have lunch in a cabin. For longer tours, not organized like above, there are a cook and mules necessary. One mule for 2 persons is 150 DH/day, a cook 150 DH/day.

 

Recommended and licensed mountain guides are the brothers Lahcen and Mohamed Bouredda. Lahcen guides mountain tours by foot, on bicycle or in winter with skiing. The brothers have also a little bed&breakfast with camping just after Imlil at the dirt road to Arumd.

To find this auberge go straight through Imlil on the dirt road to the montains and Arumd. The road to the auberge is possible with 4x4 and small car, for large camping cars difficult. In the auberge are two floors with guestrooms. No water in the rooms, but on each floor bathrooms with toilet and hot showers. From the terrace you can see both the sunrise and the sunset.

In the small garden camping for tents and 4x4, also small camping cars. There is a sanitary unit with toilet and hot shower. Also a full equipped kitchen is available for campers.

Prices: Rooms 40 DH per person, hot shower included. Bed, breakfast and dinner 100 DH per person. Camping: person 15 DH, tent 15 DH, car 15 DH, hot shower 10 DH, cold shower free.

On request transfer from Marrakech airport or hotel is possible.

Lahcen is happy to give his guests all information about trekking in the area for free, if you want to do a tour without guide. Therefore this auberge is the best place to do an unguided tour, since you start from the auberge and will not be hassled by the guides in Imlil. And he provides security, since he will come and look for you, if you don’t come back.

 

8-day-trekking-tour from Marrakech

If you want to do an all-inclusive-tour from Marrakech with transfer the Auberge Lepiney offers the following:

Day 1:  Own arrival at Marrakech, if you arrive at Marrakech airport that day you will be picked up at the airport and transferred to the hotel. Night at hotel in Marrakech.

Day 2:  Early departure from hotel in Marrakech to Imlil. There you will have a Moroccanh mint tea to welcome you. After a short rest the tour starts. Imlil – Tacheddirt, 4 hours, accommodation in bivouac or small tents or in the cabin of CAF (French Alpine Association)

Price of this package with accommodation, food and beverages is 3.200 DH per person, minimum 2 people. Only beverages on your own request are extra.

Combined tour: 1 week trekking at Djebel Toubkal, 1 week trekking in the Sahara (Erg Chegaga)

With this tour the first week is like above, organized by Lahcen Bouredda. After this week you will go back to Marrakech and Sahara Services will pick you up for the second week in the Sahara. The payment will be in two parts, first 3.200 DH in Marrakech after arrival to Lahcen Bouredda, the second part of 4.900 DH when you meet Sahara Services.

Trekking with Camel and Four-wheel-drive, departure from Marrakech

1st day: Arrival at the airport in Marrakech or Ouarzazate, transfer to the desired hotel. Depending upon arrival time opportunity to a private city sightseeing.

2nd day: Departure from the hotel to M’hamid with jeeps. Starting from Marrakech 7 a.m. and/or starting from Ouarzazate 9 a.m.  The trip goes through the valley of the Draa river with millions of palm trees and old Kasbahs. We will have lunch in Zagora, in the afternoon visit of the coran library in Tamgroute. We will sleep in a small bivouac near M’hamid in tents, dinner.

3rd day: In the morning departure on the back of the camels into the Sahara. After approximately 3 hours ride lunch break, in the afternoon we continue to the bivouac near a nomad well at oued Naam (dry river), dinner.

4th day: Through the desert on camels, after the lunch break we will come to a beautiful sand dune area. Bivouac and dinner there.

5th day: After breakfast we continue with the camels and cross a Hammada (stone desert), against noon we will come to the Oasis Sacrée, there we will have lunch in a small bivouac near the nomad well. At 3 p.m. we go to the extensive dunes of Chegaga, there we will stay in a permanent bivouac with showers and toilets. Dinner with entertainment.

6th day: Through the desert on camels, lunch break, overnight accommodation at the Oued Laatach.

7th day: The last day in the desert we experience again on the back of the camels before we reach M’hamid in the evening. We will stay in the bivouac near M’hamid.

8th day: Return trip from M’hamid to Marrakech with jeep, accommodation in the beautiful Auberge Irocha in the High Atlas.

9th day: Back to Marrakech, if wanted transfer to the airport.
